Horse racing & greyhounds

Racing is where many independent bookmakers started, and it still has a vocabulary of its own. The terms below decide what a horse or greyhound bet pays in the end.

Starting price and ante-post cover timing, non-runners and the Rule 4 deduction cover what happens when the field changes. An each-way bet means two bets of equal size, one to win and one to place, so the outlay is twice the stated stake. Tips for both horses and greyhounds belong to this section too.

The tax picture is separate. From 1 April 2027 remote betting duty goes to 25% in general, but remote bets on UK horse racing stay at 15%, as does pool betting.
